Downtown St. Charles

Long recognized as a regional leader in rehabilitation, St. Charles is the first on Long Island to offer patients Downtown St. Charles, a rehabilitation module where they can develop their adaptive skills in a full-scale in a home and community environment while still at the hospital.

Downtown St. Charles enables patients to build the strength, confidence and skills needed to overcome the physical and cognitive challenges they may face once they have returned to their daily lives.

Occupying 2,358 square feet within St. Charles Hospital’s acute rehabilitation unit, Downtown St. Charles simulates a typical home and downtown setting and offers an truly immersive rehabilitation experience.

The space includes:

Automobile

We have relocated a full-size automobile to the fourth floor to provide patients with the ability to experience safe car transfers, preparing them for discharge. In the car, patients practice adjusting to moving around a confined space and objects such as a dashboard, steering wheel, and foot pedals. Patients also learn safe transferring of mobility equipment into the car trunk.

Apartment

Our fully equipped kitchen includes a working stove/oven, dishwasher, sink, refrigerator, washer, dryer and cabinets. Food can be prepared and cooked, dishes cleaned, clothes washed and dried and groceries put away. The bedroom features a twin bed that allows patients to practice safe transfers while the bathroom features a sink, toilet and bathtub.

Market

Our simulated grocery area is stocked with realistic produce and stocked shelves. The checkout counter features a cash register, bagging area, and check-writing platform. A hand-held shopping basket is available to assist with transporting groceries. The market is complete with a coffee bar.

Mobility Tracks

Varied floor surfaces such as carpet, tile, linoleum, and cement provide walking and wheelchair practice.  A traffic light, programmed to the exact time it takes to cross a city street, allows patients the opportunity to practice safely crossing a street in a timely manner while still under the watchful eye of their therapist.  An ATM machine and mailbox are featured along with curb cuts that model community settings.

Our Town Square

The Town Square is an attractive gathering spot decorated with a Tuscan theme with small tables and chairs where patients and their loved ones can visit over a cup of coffee.  Computers with access to the internet are available for patients. A kiosk is available to patients and families featuring community and accessibility resources.
