Pediatric Rehabilitation Program
The Pediatric Rehabilitation Program at St. Charles is the only CARF-accredited Pediatric Speciality Program on Long Island and offers acute rehabilitation for infants, children and adolescents.
For over a century, St Charles has remained true to its mission – to care for children in need of rehabilitation. Our goal is to help all children and families to thrive. We focus on delivering the highest quality rehabilitation treatment, experience and outcomes possible.
The Pediatric Rehabilitation Program at St. Charles draws pediatric patients from across Long Island, New York, and the eastern United States who seek out acute rehabilitation for:
- Cerebral Palsy (CP) and other movement disorders
- Multiple Sclerosis, Muscular Dystrophy and other neuromuscular conditions
- Pediatric Stroke
- Brain Injury
- Spinal cord injury (SCI)
- Orthopedic injuries and trauma
- Pediatric Cancer
- Epilepsy and other neurological conditions
For children with brain injury, St. Charles provides some of the most specialized care that can be found on Long Island and in all of New York State, hosting the only Pediatric Brian Injury Unit on Long Island and the only CARF-accredited Pediatric Brain Injury Specialty Program in New York.
Regardless of why they seek pediatric rehabilitation at St. Charles, every infant, child and teen in our Pediatric Rehabilitation Program is cared for by Dr. Jennifer Semel, MD, medical director of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at St. Charles and a physiatrist with more than 25 years of experience in pediatric rehabilitation and three specialty board certifications--in pediatrics, physical medicine and rehabilitation, and palliative care.
A team of clinicians, including Dr. Semel, pediatric therapists, psychologists and Certified Rehabilitation Registered Nurses, provide round-the-clock care that balances the demands of acute rehabilitation treatments with each baby, child or teen’s natural need to play, learn, and develop during their hospitalization.
St Charles recognizes the importance of family in identifying the best care for each child and so involves the parents and caregivers in decisions while also gathering the entire clinical team for weekly meetings.
